A veterinary specialist has obtained advanced education in a specific field of veterinary medicine. After graduating from veterinary school, veterinarians who wish to become specialists are required to complete between three and four years of additional training in their field of expertise. Following that advanced training, they must then submit their credentials and pass a certification examination. Upon completion of this process, the veterinarian becomes a diplomate and is considered a board certified specialist.
